What stays on your device

Your chosen reading mode (Learn, Chant or Table) and light or dark theme are kept in your browser's localStorage so they are remembered next time. They stay on your device, are never sent anywhere, and you can clear them from your browser settings at any time.

Visit statistics (PostHog)

We use PostHog for visit statistics, stored in its European Union region. The requests pass through our own server (dhammadana.net) on the way to PostHog.

What is recorded: the address (URL) and title of the page you open, the address of the page that linked you here (referrer), your browser and operating system with their versions and your browser's full user-agent text, device type, screen and window size, browser language, how long you stay on a page and how far you scroll, and when you switch reading mode or theme.

What is not recorded: cookies, any identifier stored on your device, your IP address, your time zone, your location (no country or city lookup is made), your name or your email. Advertising click IDs in links (such as gclid or fbclid) are masked before sending.

To count daily visitors, PostHog combines your IP address, browser details and a random value that changes every day into a hash. This lets it group one visitor's page views within a single day; the random value is deleted daily, so the next day that link is gone. The IP address is dropped after hashing and is not stored.

If your browser sends Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control, no statistics are sent at all; this is how you can object at any time. Ad blockers are fine too; the site works the same with them.

Why, and on what basis

We use the statistics only to learn which texts are read and to improve the site. Under the EU GDPR this rests on legitimate interests (Article 6(1)(f)). Because the statistics carry no name, contact detail or lasting identifier, and you can switch them off, we consider that this interest does not override your rights. The statistics are never sold or used for advertising.

Who receives data

Cloudflare delivers and protects the site, and sees your IP address as any website's network does.

Our server sends you the pages and relays statistics to PostHog. It keeps no access logs, though its error log may briefly record details of a request that failed.

PostHog stores the statistics described above.

PostHog and Cloudflare are US companies that process this data on our behalf under their data processing agreements, which use the EU Standard Contractual Clauses for any transfer outside the EU.

How long it is kept

Statistics are kept for the retention period of our PostHog plan. They contain no IP address, cookie or lasting identifier. The daily random value used for counting is deleted within a day.
